Height and weight chart — men aged 65 and over

The healthy range by height, and an honest account of what does and does not change at this age.

The range at 65 and over, and what moves it

Healthy range at 5'5" · Asian-Indian band

50.4–62.4kg

Height loss of 3–5 cm from peak adult height is common by this age. Because BMI divides by height squared, measuring an older adult against their younger height would understate their BMI — always use a current measurement.

For an adult man of 5 feet 5 inches, that band is 12.0 kg wide — and it reads the same at 65 and over as at any other adult age, because BMI carries no age term. What genuinely changes at this age is below the table.

Why this range does not move with age

  1. Convert the height to metres and square it: 5'5" is 165.1 cm, so 1.6510² = 2.7258.
  2. Multiply by each end of the published band. That is the entire calculation; there is no decade coefficient to apply, because no adult classification publishes one.
  3. Check what a chart claiming otherwise is citing. Age-varying "ideal weight" tables trace back to mid-twentieth-century American life-insurance data, not to a current classification.
  4. Read the range as a range. Two men at opposite ends of the same row can both be healthy.
weight (kg) = BMI × 2.7258

Both columns are the same arithmetic — weight = BMI × height in metres squared — read against two different published band sets. The height links go to SehatCheck, which publishes the full BMI table for each height.

What actually changes at 65 and over

Several bodies of evidence suggest the BMI range associated with the lowest mortality shifts slightly upward in older adults, and clinical guidance often treats a BMI a little above the standard healthy band as acceptable after 65. This site does not publish an alternative band for older adults because there is no single agreed Indian one — the sensible reading is that the bottom of the range matters more than the top. Discuss it with a doctor rather than with a chart.

None of that moves the numbers in the table, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. It changes what the numbers are worth paying attention to.

A chart is not a check-up. Weight that moves without you intending it to — in either direction — is worth a conversation with a doctor regardless of which row of this table you sit in.

Questions

What is the ideal weight for a man aged 65 and over?

It depends on height, not on age. At 5'5" (165.1 cm) the healthy range is 50.4 kg to 62.4 kg on the Asian-Indian BMI band. The full table on this page gives the range for every height. No Indian or WHO adult classification publishes a different weight range for a 65 and over year old than for any other adult.

Why do other height weight charts show different numbers by age?

Most of them are reproducing a mid-twentieth-century American insurance table, or they have added an age adjustment that no published classification supports. The honest position is that adult BMI bands have no age term. This page shows what genuinely differs at 65 and over: several bodies of evidence suggest the bmi range associated with the lowest mortality shifts slightly upward in older adults, and clinical guidance often treats a bmi a little above the standard healthy band as acceptable after 65.

Does height change after 65 and over?

Height loss of 3–5 cm from peak adult height is common by this age. Because BMI divides by height squared, measuring an older adult against their younger height would understate their BMI — always use a current measurement.

Should I use the Asian-Indian column or the WHO column?

If you are Indian and living in India, the Asian-Indian column is the more relevant reference population — that is the entire finding of the 2004 WHO expert consultation. The international column is shown because it remains the WHO classification and is what international comparisons use. Between the two columns is a genuine grey zone, not an error.

Healthy weight ranges from the BMI bands published by the WHO Expert Consultation on BMI in Asian populations (2004) and the WHO international classification. No age adjustment is applied because none is published. General information only — not medical advice. Growth varies enormously between healthy individuals; a single measurement means little. Discuss any concern about a child's growth with a paediatrician. See data & method for every source, survey round and rounding rule used on this site.
