What the wall chart shows at 17 months

3rd to 97th percentile · length

76.3–86.2cm

Ninety-four healthy boys in every hundred at 17 months measure somewhere inside that band — a spread of 9.9 cm. The median sits at 81.2 cm, and the median weight at 10.7 kg. Being anywhere in the shaded channel is the ordinary case, not a finding.

What this page cannot tell you is where one particular child belongs on it, or what a position means for them. That reading needs several visits plotted together, the parents' heights, and a paediatrician.

How a measurement becomes a percentile

  1. Take the child's age in completed months and their sex. Both change the curve, so a chart read against the wrong one is simply the wrong chart.
  2. Open the reference built for that age band: the WHO 2006 standards to five years, the IAP 2015 revision from five to eighteen. This page uses WHO Child Growth Standards, 2006 release.
  3. Read the length across the row for that age. The published percentile columns are the answer; the value between two columns is not computed here, because interpolating a growth curve produces a figure that appears in no reference.
  4. Place the reading inside the 3rd–97th channel drawn above. The position is a rank in a population — nothing more is claimed by it.
  5. Repeat at the next visit. The line joining the readings is the measurement that matters clinically; a single dot is not.

ਪੂਰਾ ਹਵਾਲਾ: WHO Child Growth Standards (2006). Length/height-for-age and weight-for-age percentile tables (birth to 5 years), WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study Group. Values are WHO's own published percentile values (LMS-derived), transcribed verbatim from the official WHO Excel percentile tables. Source table.

What these numbers mean

The 50th percentile is the middle of the reference population, not a target to reach. Half of all healthy boys at 17 months measure below it. A child on the 3rd percentile and a child on the 97th percentile are both, on this evidence alone, growing normally.

A note on the measurement. Up to 24 months the WHO tables give recumbent length — the child measured lying down — and from 25 months they give standing height. The two are not interchangeable: the same child measures roughly 0.7 cm shorter standing, and WHO's own tables carry that step. This page shows length, which is the correct measurement for this age.

What a paediatrician actually reads is the shape of the line over time. Children settle onto their own channel and then follow it, and it is a change in that channel — not its height on the page — that prompts a closer look. Two measurements a year apart, plotted, carry more information than any single number compared with this table.

A percentile is a position, not a problem. Three children in every hundred are, by definition, below the 3rd percentile and perfectly healthy — someone has to be. What a paediatrician looks at is the trajectory across several visits, plotted on a chart, alongside the child's parents' heights and how the child is feeding, sleeping and developing. A single number from a single day tells almost nothing on its own.

If you are worried about your child's growth, take the measurements to a paediatrician rather than to a website. That is not a disclaimer for our benefit; it is genuinely the only way to read these numbers properly.

Questions parents ask at this age

What is the average height of a 17-month-old boy?

The median (50th percentile) length for a 17-month-old boy in the WHO Child Growth Standards is 81.2 cm. Half of healthy boys that age measure above that and half below. The 3rd to 97th range is 76.3 cm to 86.2 cm — which is how wide "normal" genuinely is at this age.

What is the average weight of a 17-month-old boy?

The median weight is 10.7 kg, with the 3rd to 97th percentile range running from 8.7 kg to 13.2 kg. Weight varies more than height does at every age, and it responds to a recent illness or a growth spurt far more quickly.

My boy is below the 50th percentile — is that a problem?

No. Half of all healthy children are below the 50th percentile; that is what a median is. Growth is assessed by whether a child is following their own curve consistently over time, together with parental heights, feeding and general development. A paediatrician reading a plotted chart can tell you that. A single measurement compared to a table cannot.

Which chart is this from?

WHO Child Growth Standards. The WHO standards are used in India and internationally for children under five, and describe growth under conditions that do not constrain it.

Percentile values reproduced without modification from the WHO Child Growth Standards (2006 release); transcription last checked JUL 2026. General information only — not medical advice. Growth varies enormously between healthy individuals; a single measurement means little. Discuss any concern about a child's growth with a paediatrician.
