How to increase height — honestly

This is one of the most searched health questions in India and one of the worst served. Here is what is actually true, including the part nobody selling a product will tell you.

After the growth plates close, you cannot. Adult height is fixed. The growth plates at the ends of the long bones ossify at the end of puberty — typically by about 14–16 in girls and 16–18 in boys — and once they have, the bones cannot lengthen. No supplement, stretch, device, diet or exercise reverses that.

While a child is still growing, three things genuinely matter: nutrition, sleep, and treating illness that is suppressing growth. That is the whole honest list.

Why adult height is fixed

Long bones do not grow along their whole length. They lengthen at the epiphyseal plates — thin discs of cartilage near each end, where new cartilage is laid down and progressively replaced by bone. Through childhood that process adds length steadily; through the pubertal growth spurt it accelerates sharply; and then the rising sex-hormone levels that drove the spurt also close the plates. The cartilage is fully replaced by bone, the plate becomes a line on an X-ray, and the bone's length is final.

This is why the answer is not "it is very difficult" or "it takes dedication". There is no longer a structure present that could lengthen the bone. Growth-plate closure is visible on a hand X-ray, which is how paediatric endocrinologists assess remaining growth potential in a child.

open growth plates → height can still change · closed growth plates → it cannot

What is sold against this search, and why it cannot work

Height-increase capsules, powders, ayurvedic "grow taller" tonics, homeopathic sprays, magnetic insoles, stretching machines and "height increase" apps do not increase adult height. None of them has evidence of doing so, and none of them has a mechanism by which they could. Where they contain calcium, vitamin D or a multivitamin blend, they are a multivitamin sold at a large markup with a photograph attached.

The marketing usually works one of three ways. It shows a before-and-after where the "after" is a person standing straighter, wearing different shoes, or photographed from a different angle. It quotes testimonials from adolescents who were going to grow anyway — a 14-year-old boy taking anything at all during his growth spurt will get taller, and the product takes the credit. Or it relies on the temporary spinal decompression effect: measure yourself first thing in the morning after a night lying down and you are genuinely 1–2 cm taller than you were the previous evening, and that is enough to produce a screenshot.

If a product claims to add inches to an adult, the claim is false. That is not a cautious hedge; there is no adult height product that works.

What genuinely helps a child reach their potential

Genetics sets the range — mid-parental height is the strongest single predictor of a child's adult height. Everything below is about whether a child arrives at the top or the bottom of their own range, and it is the reason national average heights have risen so much in populations whose genetics did not change.

  • Enough total energy and protein through childhood and adolescence. Chronic under-nutrition in the first few years is the single largest cause of adults being shorter than their genetic potential, and much of that gap is not recoverable later.
  • Micronutrients — especially iron, zinc, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin A. Deficiency suppresses growth; correcting a real deficiency restores it. Supplementing a child who is not deficient does not make them taller than their potential.
  • Sleep. Growth hormone is released in pulses, predominantly during deep sleep. Chronically short sleep through adolescence is not a trivial thing.
  • Treating illness that suppresses growth. Untreated coeliac disease, hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease, repeated severe infection and some inflammatory conditions all slow growth, sometimes with faltering height as the first visible sign. This is the most important item on the list, because it is the one where a doctor changes the outcome.
  • Physical activity. Good for bone density, strength and health generally. It does not add height beyond potential, and no particular sport does — basketball and swimming select tall people rather than producing them.
If a child's growth has slowed or fallen away from their curve, that is a paediatrician's question and often a treatable one. Bring the measurements; the pattern over time is what matters. Do not buy a supplement first — you would be spending money and, more importantly, time.

The one thing an adult can genuinely change

Posture. Not as a metaphor — measurably. Habitual slouching, a forward head position, tight hip flexors and a weak posterior chain can cost one to two centimetres on a stadiometer, and correcting them recovers that. You do not grow; you stop measuring shorter than you are.

Alongside that, spinal disc height compresses through the day and recovers overnight, which is why you are tallest within an hour of waking. If you want a consistent measurement, take it at the same time of day every time. If you want your maximum measurement, take it in the morning — and know that you have chosen the flattering time, not gained anything.

The rest of what determines how you look and feel at your height is body composition, and that genuinely does still move. This site's height and weight chart is a reasonable place to start, and SehatCheck handles the BMI arithmetic behind it.

Limb-lengthening surgery, since people ask

It exists, it works, and it is a serious orthopaedic operation. The femur or tibia is cut and separated slowly — around a millimetre a day — while new bone forms in the gap, either with an external frame or an internal motorised nail. Gains of roughly 5–8 cm per segment are typical, over months of distraction and consolidation followed by extended rehabilitation, with real risks including nerve injury, joint contracture, non-union and infection.

It is mentioned here only because leaving it out would make this page incomplete, and because someone reading a "grow taller" advertisement deserves to know what the only genuine intervention actually involves. It is not a cosmetic shortcut.

Questions

Can height be increased after 18?

No. Adult height is set when the growth plates — the cartilage zones at the ends of the long bones — ossify and close, which typically happens by around 14 to 16 in girls and 16 to 18 in boys. Once they are closed the bones cannot lengthen, and nothing taken by mouth or done in a gym reopens them. The only interventions that change adult height are surgical limb lengthening, which is a major orthopaedic procedure with a long recovery and real complication rates, and hormone treatment prescribed for specific diagnosed deficiencies during childhood.

Do height increase medicines, capsules and powders work?

No. There is no supplement, ayurvedic capsule, protein powder, homeopathic drop or spray that has been shown to increase adult height, and there is no mechanism by which one could — a closed growth plate is bone. Products sold for this in India are typically multivitamin or calcium blends marketed on before-and-after images. Correcting a genuine nutritional deficiency in a still-growing child can help that child reach their own potential; nothing sold to an adult can add a centimetre.

Does stretching, hanging or skipping make you taller?

Not in any lasting way. Spinal discs compress slightly through the day, so almost everyone measures about 1 to 2 cm shorter in the evening than on waking, and decompressing the spine by hanging or lying down recovers some of that temporarily. That is the entire effect. It is a change in how compressed you are, not in how long your bones are, and it reverses within hours.

What genuinely affects how tall a child becomes?

Genetics sets the range — parental height is by far the strongest predictor. Within that range, the things that decide whether a child reaches their potential are adequate nutrition through childhood and adolescence (energy, protein, and micronutrients including iron, zinc, vitamin D and calcium), enough sleep, and treatment of chronic illness, repeated infection and untreated conditions such as coeliac disease or hypothyroidism that quietly suppress growth. None of that is exotic and none of it is sold in a bottle.

Can posture change my height?

Measured height, yes, slightly and genuinely. Habitual slouching, tight hip flexors and weak posterior-chain muscles can cost a centimetre or two on a stadiometer, and correcting them recovers it. That is not growth — it is standing at your actual height instead of below it. It is also the only thing on this page an adult can do that changes the number.

Does growth hormone increase height in adults?

Not in adults with closed growth plates, and taking it without a diagnosed deficiency carries real harms including joint pain, insulin resistance, fluid retention and raised diabetes risk. Growth hormone is a prescription treatment for specific diagnosed conditions in children, given under endocrinologist supervision. It is not a height product.
